Published about 2 months ago • 3 min read
Hi Reader,
You know I love London, but sometimes I get the itch to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Luckily, there are some incredible short trips I can take that give me a taste of classic British countryside or a peek into charming nearby towns… or even take me to another country. In today’s newsletter, I’m sharing all about them:
🌳 My favorite day trips from London—perfect for when you want to explore beyond the capital. 🚆 The most fun way to get to Scotland—spoiler alert: it’s a train that lets you fall asleep in London and wake up in Scotland. (I seriously love this way of traveling.) 🕒 My guide to 48 hours in Edinburgh—because if I tell you how to get there, I’ll tell you what to do too. 🗺️ How to travel from London to other parts of the UK—whether you’re taking the train, renting a car, or joining a guided tour, this is my guide to getting yourself around England and beyond. 🇫🇷 Hidden gems in Paris—because Paris is just a train ride away from London.

10 best places to go on a day trip from London 🚂
While I definitely encourage you to make the most of your time in London, especially if it’s limited, sometimes the hustle and bustle can become a little bit overwhelming. This is when a day trip from London becomes tempting, providing the perfect escape from the busy city streets. Whether you want to see the classic British countryside or fancy diving into a nearby town’s history and heritage, exploring somewhere different is relatively easy if you know where you’re going.
If you’re considering a visit to Scotland during your London trip, that would be easily understood. The moody architecture, beautiful landscapes, and top-quality whiskey and gin are all extremely appealing, to myself included 🙋🏻♀️
I’ve been to Edinburgh a few times now and my favourite way to get there and back, by far, is by Caledonian Sleeper. It’s a sleeper train that lets you fall asleep in London and wake up in Scotland (or vice versa), meaning you don’t have to waste 4+ hours of precious exploring time just sitting on a daytime train or waiting at the airport for your flight.
The Caledonian Sleeper is super comfortable, with the option to book a private, en-suite room equipped with a cosy bed, on which you can be rocked to sleep as you make your way to your destination 😴
Head to their website to find out more about Caledonian Sleeper, and don’t wait too long to book, tickets go fast. Plus, you can book up to 12 months in advance.
How to visit Edinburgh from London: 48 Hour Guide 🏰
If you decide to take the Caledonian Sleeper and make your way to the beautiful city of Edinburgh, I’ve got you covered. After my last visit a couple of weeks ago, I wrote this guide with everything you need to know to spend the best 48 hours in the city. From accommodation to activities and food, it’s all here.

That's Edinburgh Castle, BTW!
There are many ways to travel in the UK, and this article covers them all. From taking the train cross-country and renting a car to organising a guided tour and taking a flight (if you really have to). From the quaint villages in The Cotswolds to the castles and curios of Windsor, here’s how to travel from London to other parts of the UK.
You just know I had to mention Paris too. I love this city, and it’s such a quick trip from London by train. Paris expert Lily from our sister brand Love and Paris has chosen 10 of her favorite hidden gems of 20 years (!!) of living in the city, and listed them in this article.
